The Excellence Flywheel
We so often look at talent in static terms: what school someone attended, what companies they’ve worked for, what title they held. But credentials are a crappy sign of capability.
Nor does excellent talent consist of magic. There’s no secret sauce, no mutant gene.
Only behavior drives performance. Behavior that begins with Proactivity, sharpens through Precision, adjusts Selective Speed for context, and ends with Relentless Execution. This Excellence Flywheel is a behavioral model. It gives hiring managers something substantive to seek out. And it gives individuals something tangible to train.
AI tools can help you identify or train the flywheel behaviors. Use this prompt and attach a resume or cover letter in your chosen AI model:
You are an expert career coach + resume editor. Consider the attached resume or cover letter. For each bullet/claim, detect the four Excellence Flywheel behaviors: Proactivity, Precision, Selective Speed, Relentless Execution. For every bullet/claim, return exactly the relevant behavior(s) and confidence level.
After all bullets/claims, add:
Overall (2 lines): state whether the doc shows the Excellence Flywheel and which behavior(s) are weakest.
Top 3 fixes (3 one-line, prioritized edits the candidate should make).
Use this directional rubric:
Proactivity = “started/initiated” verbs
Precision = “defined/standardized/asked” signals
Selective Speed = explicit speed choice (paused/launched fast)
Relentless Execution = finished/iterated/rescued🛠️ Career Strategy x AI Tactic

The Great CEO Within
Entrepreneur and career coach Matt Mochary wrote an exceptional book called The Great CEO Within (grab it for free here) based on his experiences coaching the CEOs of firms like Coinbase, OpenAI, Sequoia, and many more. It’s a great and easy read, offering concrete guidance on how to run a company more effectively.
He also wrote a lesser-known companion to the book that has templates for everything from 1:1 meetings and inbox management to offsites and firing.
🧠 Curiosity Corner
Airswimming
Here’s a still from a silly video from Reddit. It’s about “airswimming,” where a dog attempts to doggy-paddle through the air in certain circumstances, such as being lowered into a bathtub or going for a bike ride.
You can watch the video here. Happy New Year!
💼 Job Board
$150K is the new $100K
Here are the 3 most interesting remote job openings I’ve seen this week:
