A restaurant chain raises private equity at a… £300m valuation!?

Dishoom, the London-based Indian restaurant chain, is one of the my favorite places in the world. They just announced they will raise funding from the PE fund L Catterton to expand into the US.

While I’m excited to have Dishoom closer to home, I’m worried about how a business that does pre-tax profits of £7.4m will ever be worth 300m. I don’t see a path for Dishoom to grow 40x, no matter how good it is.

But I really hope they figure it out! And in the meantime, I’ll be using the Dishoom cookbook to make meals at home.
